  • A Fairytale Moment

Every piece of this kit made it feel like I was building a scene from a storybook. The roses, the soft moonlight, and those delicate little windows are absolutely dreamy. The built-in light and music box were my favorite touch. It took me around 5 hours, and it was worth it.

  • Beautiful Details, Easy Build

I’ve put together other book nooks, but this one has a unique charm. The Beast’s outline, the cozy lighting, and the petals in the air are gorgeous. Everything fit well, and the directions were straightforward. It instantly became the most eye-catching piece on my shelf.

  • My New Favorite Book Nook

I’ve completed plenty of book nooks, and this one is easily the most charming. The Beast silhouette, gentle lighting, and floating petals create such a gorgeous scene. All the parts fit nicely, and the instructions were straightforward. It instantly turned into the highlight of my display.

I enjoyed working on Phantom of the Opera, except for the stairs. They were badly designed, didn't fit well, and the design made installing the plastic railings very, very difficult. I liked the overall design, the box frame and protective front cover, and the three way lighting system.

    Lots of fun details

I had so much fun putting this thing together. It was not as difficult as I thought it would be. The detail is very nice when it is all put together. First, it comes in a small but heavy box. I'm not sure what I expected but when I opened the box I felt suddenly overwhelmed! Turns out it was needless as it also came with a thick instruction book telling you exactly how and where to place each piece. All of the sheets were labelled appropriately and I had no trouble following the instructions. I recommend having extra glue on hand. I had plenty of extra because I do other crafts but I think the small tube you get isn't quite enough. In my case, the glue provided by the company leaked and ended up sticking to the mirrors which cracked when I tried to remove the glue. That is the reason for the marked down in stars. Both of the mirrors cracked but I used them anyhow because you do not really see the mirrors once it is all put together.

The book nook comes together easily enough but it is very unstable until the last pieces are put together. Some pieces I actually glued in place because as I moved forward the whole thing would not sit right and constantly fell apart. The lighting was not difficult but I had trouble when I assembled the final parts so they are not "exactly" in the correct spot, but no big deal there either. I learned a whole lot putting this together and I can't wait to start a new one.

Once the whole thing was together I was definitely impressed. Everything worked as it should and it sits perfectly on my bookshelf. I used different tweezers as the ones provided were not as good as others I have. At times I even used two pairs because the pieces were tiny as you can see by the size of the mirror. I would definitely purchase another kit since it went together so easily and looks cute on my shelf.

Great kit, easy to follow instructions

I found this kit to be more on the challenging side. I liked it. If you are looking for a kit that will take more time then this is the one! It is made of great quality. The step by step color instructions are broken down into very small easy steps. They are easy to understand. I like that the lights are color and they tell you exactly where to place them. They are very dim, but I think because it's an opera that is the way they should be. This is a good kit. I enjoyed putting it together. It comesWith several extra pieces for just in case the more delicate pieces break. The hardest thing for me was the chandelier. I could not get it together. I still found this relaxing and very enjoyable. Definitely worth adding to my collection.

I've built quite a few wood models and I have to say this is probably my favorite. The wood is thicker and more sturdy than the other models I've built. The fit of the pieces is very tight and very little glue is needed. The finished piece is great and I've had a lot of compliments on it from friends and family. It's a fairly easy build and suitable for beginners.

Went big for my third attempt - The Phantom of the Opera Max. Easy to follow instructions. Hardest part? Attaching the banisters to the stairs

Moderately challenging build. Good quality pieces and precision cut parts. Wiring could be better.

This kit is an expanded and more detailed version of their original standard sized Phantom of the Opera book nook. It repeats a few of the same scenes from the story and also recycles some of the same parts--the figures for example. Like other Mini City kits, this one has superb quality in its craftsmanship--the overall design, the wooden boards, the plastic and acrylic accent pieces and especially the precision in the cuts and the way the pieces fit together. It was at times fun and frustrating to assemble this. Most of that frustration came from the wires for the lights and the instructions for them. There are ten lights to this kit--nine single bulbs and one LED strip. ALL of the lights combine into a single plug for the battery box. This caused a lot of difficulty when assembling 'part 2' of the kit, which is the bulk of the entire model. At the end of part 1, you are instructed to place one of the lights into its position on the base plate that EVERYTHING in part 2 is built upon. Because all the lights are connected, you end up with a giant bundle of wires constantly in your way for the remainder of the assembly. If just that one light was split off by itself, things would have gone so much better. The end result is of course stunning, especially with the 3-stage lighting effect (one press for just the chandelier, second press illuminates the main stage, third press adds mood lighting to the phantom's underground lair). This is worth the effort, and the price, as there are so many extra pieces to give more detail to the model.

I took notes as I worked on it, here are some of my observations:

Pieces are cut well, pop out cleanly, but the printing chips easily, even when the utmost care is taken when removing them from the boards.

Instructions give a helpful list of the boards needed for each part, but that list is incomplete--right at the start of part 1, I needed a piece from a board that was not listed. Ended up using 3 more boards than first indicated.

Parts all fit together nicely, but some have no 'bite' so I needed to use a lot of glue even when instructions did not mention it. Rarely did I need to force anything beyond the usual "snap-click" of parts coming together properly.

Instructions divided into 3 chapters/parts, but the work overlaps between them.

The middle piece, which is the second floor with all the stairs, just sits on top of the lower level--no connectors between them at all. Locks in place only from side wall snap-ins.

Some steps seem out of place, such as putting statues in behind the stairs *after* the stairs were built.

Christine figure is a repeat from the first kit, so she is facing the wrong direction for this layout. I flipped her around so she is now at least looking in the direction of the Phantom at the head of the steps. The candlestick is also recycled from the first kit, and is out of scale as a result.

In the middle of building, ALL the wiring instructions appear, except for the image showing which light was which--that was way up front in the parts list. Some of the lights would have been easier to run prior to this step, others could have waited until later.

In the end, my advice is to read the entire instruction booklet first--not to memorize the steps, but to get a general sense of the build and possibly avoid the aggravating steps that are out of order. This is not a kit for beginners, but it is overall not a real challenge for experts.
